Work Smarter, NOT Harder

Hey there, teacher friends! We are approaching the end of the semester, a time when many are a bit frazzled and exhausted! It made me think it was the perfect time to put together a post I've been thinking about for awhile.

We can all agree that teachers work hard. It seems that you can never get ahead. Something always comes up that demands your attention. I can remember my first couple years of teaching and how late I worked each night. My husband, a very patient man, had to encourage me to "get it together" so I could spend more time at home with my family. And he was right. Teaching can consume you to the point that you neglect your own needs and the needs of your family.

I've now been teaching for ten years, and I continue to look for ideas to help me stay organized and on top of things. Some questions I consider...What do I spend the most time on? Is there anything I do over and over again (day after day, week after week, year after year)? Is there a way to simplify that or prepare for it better?

Here's a few of my favorite tips:

Daily Checklist
When I was in the classroom (I'm now the Title I Reading Specialist), I used a daily checklist to keep me on track. I had my list of things I needed to do every day slipped inside a page protector. As I accomplish things on the list, I cross it off and when the week is done I can use it all over again. The best thing is that it kept me focused and allowed me to leave on time (without a bunch of things cluttering up the back of my mind).

My checklist looks a little different now. It is monthly, but still serves the same purpose!

One of my old daily checklists.

New Student Prep

Here's another thing I learned early in my teaching career. Getting ready for a new student can be tough--or it can be simple. After the first year of scrambling to gather all the materials, label them, and be ready for a new student the night before, I stumbled on the "new student bag" idea. Every year after that, I made two new student bags while I prepped at the beginning of the year. It made getting a new student so much easier.

This year, I'm prepared for new students to my intervention room as well. Folders with assessment forms are ready and waiting for when a new student is referred to me.

Bulletin Boards

Choose bulletin board ideas that can stay up all year, such as one where student work is swapped out frequently or where you are adding character traits all year. Your students will benefit from more time spent on preparing lessons than they will cute bulletin boards or decorations that you are swapping out. Now if decorating is your "jam" then go for it, but don't feel pressured to make your room "pinterest-worthy."

Special Helper (instead of job chart)

And while we're at it, tie this into your assigned line!
Skip the job chart. Choose one student to be your special helper of the week. They get to do ALL the jobs that week. No more swapping out names with a job chart that takes up space or  remembering who has which jobs. It's always the special helper. If they're absent, the next person in line fills in for the day.

Can we talk assigned lines for a minute? Yes, please use an assigned line. It simplifies your life and everyone else's in the building who might be responsible for lining up your students. NOW THIS IS IMPORTANT--ROTATE YOUR LINE! Sorry I had to yell, but no kid wants to be at the back of the line all year. Or last to lunch every day. It's really very simple to rotate the line each week. The student at the front, goes to the back. You have a new line leader (special helper) and the order has not really changed so there is no need to learn a new assigned line.

Parent Teacher Conferences

PT conference prep was a snap once I started using data binders. Put everything in there that you will want to share with parents. Teach your kids how to add things to the binder, track their own data (which can be pretty motivational), and you won't be scrambling to get ready for conferences.

This year, I wrote personalized letters to the parents of all my kids at conference time and again last week to update them on their child's progress. This was very time consuming, so I will definitely be looking to simplify for next year.

Lesson Planning

My lesson planning system in my classroom took several years to master, but in the end it was the best thing that I did to save myself time. Seriously.

I created an overview for the year with an estimated date to teach each unit.
I made one of these for every subject.
Then I created a page(s) like this for each unit. I would list all available resources that I had in my files (i.e. task cards, games, online videos, etc.) so that I could pull out what I needed
based on the needs of my class that given year. This was even simpler when following a curriculum (i.e. Unit 1, Week 3). I would add key pieces of information to those (i.e. vocabulary, sight words, decodables, leveled readers, etc.). I would also add a section of copies and materials needed to make prep work easier. I used these pages year after year (obviously making some changes as needed), but for the most part my planning was done at the beginning of the year!
If you want to give it a try, I set up a template for you. Feel free to download it and adapt it to fit your needs.

Well, that's all I can think of for now. Maybe it will give you a few ideas to try. What about you? Do you have any tips for us to work smarter, not harder? If so, leave them in the comments below!

Daily Math

Summer is officially here for me, but I am already thinking some about next year.  I have done Daily 5 reading for the past few years and really like it.  Last year, I implemented math groups.  For some reason, math groups are just hard for me.  Although, I believe it was really good for the kids, so I'm looking at how I can arrange it next year.  This year I had 3 rotations-1.  Work with teacher  2.  Moby Max on ipads  3.  Seat work.  It was OK, but I'd like to incorporate some more hands on activities but not quite sure how to do it and/or organize it.  So, anyone who is doing math groups and rotations, I'd love to hear what you are doing and how you are doing it.  I look forward to hearing about your math groups!

Have a great day!

Five for Friday - Classroom Setup Round 2

Hey there!
I'm back for some more classroom pictures today.
I will do a video soon.

My kids were off work on Friday, so they went with me to my classroom for one final push to get it all setup. I returned today and finished cleaning up and I think it is finally done! Now I have every intention of taking the next two weeks off (mostly) to rest up for back to work. I report on the 22nd and have students on the 25th.

So let's get to it!

I'm linking up with Doodle Bugs again!

1

This first one cracks me up!
Kristi and I agreed to get together and work on our TPT store early on Thursday which meant ponytails and no makeup. This made Kristi even more camera shy. Ha!

2

These are photo containers from Michaels. I was so excited to get two of them (one for reading and one for math) and planned to use them for our "I have...who has...?" games and task cards.

Turns out I am a task card/card game addict and these are full of only my MATH resources! Yikes!

But don't they look pretty? ;-)

3

I bought these white plastic tubs last year and finally got them labeled.

4

This is how I left my room today:

Desks ready for "Meet the Teacher!" Woohoo!

5

I finally got around to making a fluency tub.

I'll do a more detailed blog post soon so you can see what is in there!

I plan to use it as one of my morning tubs and choices for early finishers. The morning tubs are because I will have the non-breakfast eaters in my room this year.

Bonus Picture?

This is really a public service announcement for any and all who are using student data binders.

This will be my first year having student data binders.
I am so excited.
I started out browsing TPT and putting some things on my wishlist and then I found this FREE, editable data tracking binder from The Curriculum Corner

Have a great week!

10 Day Countdown, Checking in with Customers, and Organizing!

Yes, it is that time of year!

I have my 10 day balloon countdown up and ready for Monday morning.
The kiddos will be so stinkin' excited!
Oh, who am I kidding?
I'm so stinkin' excited!

I know I have shared this every year, but you never know who might be new to the blog...so...

Each morning, I will pop a balloon.
Inside is a piece of paper with a fun activity or treat written on it for us to enjoy.

I have two simple rules for the balloons that help tremendously with the final days craziness.

1. If you get in trouble, you don't do/have the next balloon activity/treat.
2. If you complain about the activity or treat, you don't get to enjoy it.

The activities/treats change from year to year, but include things like ink pen day, bubble gum day, kickball game, ice cream party, movie, extra recess, etc.

This next thing I tried to share on Facebook, but since I called my students my customers I'm pretty sure FB hid the post from most of you. :(

I love to check in with my 'customers' this time of year.
This week they were to tell me what I definitely needed to keep for my next 2nd grade class. I love reading their responses! Here's some of my favorites:

This one cracked me up...still waiting on shoulder surgery and the kiddos know it. :-/

The most popular things are definitely ball chairs, Moby Max, Showbie, and Class Dojo. I was happy to see several things about math rounds and Daily 5 too.

This was probably my favorite though! This guy struggles in math, but has come to enjoy our Hotshots!
Makes my heart happy!

Lastly, I've spent the last couple weeks before school in our teachers' lounge/work room. There is such great storage in there, but it was in need of some cleaning out and organization.

These pictures make me smile. :-)

Now I need to focus on tidying up my storage closet!

I also like to get as much done as I can for those crazy first few weeks back to school in August...lots to do to wrap up the year!

This is Kind of Embarrassing...

I'm really putting myself out there...letting this picture be first in the post for all to see.

No judgement please. I really do consider myself a very organized person--except this one area!

What can I say?

This is reality.

This is a picture of my desk at home. As you can tell, I never sit there...like ever.

In my defense, the desk is shoved into the corner of my 30 x 25 foot living room with poor lighting.

Over the last several years, I have tried to work there.

I really have.

However, it is always short lived because I feel a bit like a little kid who has been sent to put their nose in the corner after bad behavior. Ha!

Monday I got my hair done, took my son to the orthodontist, finished up my shopping and wrapping, and watched Christmas movies (you know, the normal Christmas break kind of stuff).

Tuesday I woke up with an idea...a big idea that would hopefully solve my desk dilemma once and for all.

Move the desk.

I know, I know!

You're probably thinking, DUH!

But this was the first time it had occurred to me in the seven years we have lived here. Yes, seven years of making a mess on my table  or setting up office on the couch when I needed to work.

So I did it!

I spent the entire day moving the desk, purging some things, and organizing my new space.

Drum roll please...

Yes, that is a green clock on a blue wall. Don't ask. HA!

Doesn't it look great? And this picture shows my view when I sit down to work. No more nose in the corner!!!

Yes, that is a breakfast of champions...bacon and cheese omelet and coffee drink (of course).

You're also looking at my new (to me) MacBook which I have no idea how to use. I put it on my Christmas list as kind of a joke--needed a new laptop and have always heard good things about Macs... Anyway, my husband went with it and completely surprised me! Any pointers for learning how to use it would be appreciated!

I hope you're enjoying your break!
Have a great day!

New Planner - My birthday present to me!

I'm linking up with Barb for show-and-tell to show off my new planner, a birthday present to myself that actually arrived on my birthday (last Friday). You can't beat that timing!

It is the Family Planner from Plum Paper Designs on Etsy.

I'm so stinkin' excited about this thing! I'll give you a peek inside down below, but let me show you first why I wanted this planner.

Take a peek at the binder/planner I used last year:

I added these weekly planner pages to my binder because I wanted it all in one place. I didn't want a planner for home and one for school. The problem was that the binder was too big and bulky to take to and from school, so I left it at school every day.

I also had a blog planner. Take a look:

You can see that the blog planner slowly became a lot of wasted paper. The last picture is fuzzy because the only thing I write in there now is our income and expenses for our TPT and TN store.

Don't get me wrong. I think some people need a blog planner...like serious bloggers. Not someone like me.

Okay, now for the inside of my planner and why I am loving it!

First, it is small enough to fit in my purse so I will be able to take it back and forth to school in my school bag with no problems.

Second, it has stickers. ;-)
(I'm easy to please, ha!)

The Mondays are covered up because that is my bills and I'm sure that is boring to you.

I made a key of my color-coding stickers until I can remember what color is for each of us.

Okay, now for my favorite thing about this planner!

Custom sections on my weekly view! Hooray! You can customize seven sections.

Notice I left the first one blank. I really wanted it to be free for my memory verses--the next few months, I'm working on Psalm 19.

My next sections are fitness, morning, afternoon, evening, blog, and meals.

I love being able to keep track of my workouts (especially now that I'm mixing it up on the BeFit channel with hubby's smart TV).

The morning, afternoon, evening, and meals sections are the easiest way for me to schedule my days.

Did you see the heart by the blog section? That's because I love just having a few lines to jot notes--instead of a whole separate planner. PERFECT!

Thanks for letting me show-and-tell! Check out Barb's linky party for more (hers is hilarious--so much like me I had to laugh and grab the poster).

Mission - Closet Organization

First I want to say what a great HOP we had this weekend. I got so many great resources for FREE! I started working on getting some of them ready today. To celebrate our new Facebook followers, I'm planning a big sale soon...so stay tuned.

Moving on...despite our freezing temperatures, we went back for inservice today. Kiddos come tomorrow. The one thing that I wanted to accomplish on my two week break was to organize my closet. I have a closet right next to my room (thankfully). The problem was this summer by the time I got to this point in moving, I was ready to be done and just "shoved" things in there. The last few weeks before the break, I was getting extremely annoyed to go stand in the closet and say, "Where did I put..."

You understand, I'm sure.

Anyway, I waited until the last possible day (last Friday) and went for it...

The empty shelves are due to the fact that I *almost* forgot to take before pictures.

Here's what was on the shelves...yes, I know. Way too many baggies!

More Before Pics

Before...

After...

After...

After...
It turned out great! Everything labeled and in its place. Wonder how long that will last... ;-)
