Work Smarter, NOT Harder

Hey there, teacher friends! We are approaching the end of the semester, a time when many are a bit frazzled and exhausted! It made me think it was the perfect time to put together a post I've been thinking about for awhile.

We can all agree that teachers work hard. It seems that you can never get ahead. Something always comes up that demands your attention. I can remember my first couple years of teaching and how late I worked each night. My husband, a very patient man, had to encourage me to "get it together" so I could spend more time at home with my family. And he was right. Teaching can consume you to the point that you neglect your own needs and the needs of your family.

I've now been teaching for ten years, and I continue to look for ideas to help me stay organized and on top of things. Some questions I consider...What do I spend the most time on? Is there anything I do over and over again (day after day, week after week, year after year)? Is there a way to simplify that or prepare for it better?

Here's a few of my favorite tips:

Daily Checklist
When I was in the classroom (I'm now the Title I Reading Specialist), I used a daily checklist to keep me on track. I had my list of things I needed to do every day slipped inside a page protector. As I accomplish things on the list, I cross it off and when the week is done I can use it all over again. The best thing is that it kept me focused and allowed me to leave on time (without a bunch of things cluttering up the back of my mind).

My checklist looks a little different now. It is monthly, but still serves the same purpose!

One of my old daily checklists.

New Student Prep

Here's another thing I learned early in my teaching career. Getting ready for a new student can be tough--or it can be simple. After the first year of scrambling to gather all the materials, label them, and be ready for a new student the night before, I stumbled on the "new student bag" idea. Every year after that, I made two new student bags while I prepped at the beginning of the year. It made getting a new student so much easier.

This year, I'm prepared for new students to my intervention room as well. Folders with assessment forms are ready and waiting for when a new student is referred to me.

Bulletin Boards

Choose bulletin board ideas that can stay up all year, such as one where student work is swapped out frequently or where you are adding character traits all year. Your students will benefit from more time spent on preparing lessons than they will cute bulletin boards or decorations that you are swapping out. Now if decorating is your "jam" then go for it, but don't feel pressured to make your room "pinterest-worthy."

Special Helper (instead of job chart)

And while we're at it, tie this into your assigned line!
Skip the job chart. Choose one student to be your special helper of the week. They get to do ALL the jobs that week. No more swapping out names with a job chart that takes up space or  remembering who has which jobs. It's always the special helper. If they're absent, the next person in line fills in for the day.

Can we talk assigned lines for a minute? Yes, please use an assigned line. It simplifies your life and everyone else's in the building who might be responsible for lining up your students. NOW THIS IS IMPORTANT--ROTATE YOUR LINE! Sorry I had to yell, but no kid wants to be at the back of the line all year. Or last to lunch every day. It's really very simple to rotate the line each week. The student at the front, goes to the back. You have a new line leader (special helper) and the order has not really changed so there is no need to learn a new assigned line.

Parent Teacher Conferences

PT conference prep was a snap once I started using data binders. Put everything in there that you will want to share with parents. Teach your kids how to add things to the binder, track their own data (which can be pretty motivational), and you won't be scrambling to get ready for conferences.

This year, I wrote personalized letters to the parents of all my kids at conference time and again last week to update them on their child's progress. This was very time consuming, so I will definitely be looking to simplify for next year.

Lesson Planning

My lesson planning system in my classroom took several years to master, but in the end it was the best thing that I did to save myself time. Seriously.

I created an overview for the year with an estimated date to teach each unit.
I made one of these for every subject.
Then I created a page(s) like this for each unit. I would list all available resources that I had in my files (i.e. task cards, games, online videos, etc.) so that I could pull out what I needed
based on the needs of my class that given year. This was even simpler when following a curriculum (i.e. Unit 1, Week 3). I would add key pieces of information to those (i.e. vocabulary, sight words, decodables, leveled readers, etc.). I would also add a section of copies and materials needed to make prep work easier. I used these pages year after year (obviously making some changes as needed), but for the most part my planning was done at the beginning of the year!
If you want to give it a try, I set up a template for you. Feel free to download it and adapt it to fit your needs.

Well, that's all I can think of for now. Maybe it will give you a few ideas to try. What about you? Do you have any tips for us to work smarter, not harder? If so, leave them in the comments below!

Five for Friday - Precipitation, New Student, and Daily 5!

Hi there!

It's been awhile since you heard from me.

Mostly because when it was my turn to blog, I was having computer/internet problems. I think I've got that all sorted out now.

And more recently I've been a little consumed with getting my online presence started for my book. Things are really falling into place fast now! Eeek!

Linking up with Kacey at Doodlebugs!

Now for a random peek into the last couple of weeks:

1

We've been learning about the water cycle in science, so I was looking for some quick and easy experiments we could do. I even took some pictures, but when I went to put them in here... I must have deleted off my phone. :-(

Anyway, here's the pin (and pic) that inspired our experiment and the kids thought it was pretty cool. I loved how many times I heard the word 'precipitation.' Ha!

2

If you do not have new student bags, you need them. I found out late last Friday that I would have a new student on Monday (odd for a new student to start on a two-day week, but hey...). My new student bag was a LIFESAVER (old pic).

3

Since we only had two days this week AND a new student, we spent some time reviewing and practicing our Daily 5 procedures. I miss using my PowerPoint (I don't give "choice" until 2nd semester).

My technology problems have not just been at home, but also at school. We have had internet problems--still can't connect our iPads. :-(

I've also been without my projector for about a month. I realize I am SUPER spoiled, but I miss it. A LOT. We are "this close" to me having a working projector again. Cross your fingers? Say a prayer for me? ;-)

My son (17 years old) first started asking to take piano lessons when he was 4 years old. I put him off for three years because I did not want to have to make him practice. He has played the piano for ten years now and I have never had to make him practice!

In fact, his desire to practice far exceeds my desire to listen! Please understand, I love to hear him play, but the piano is in the living room. We have only one television in the house, so we are constantly running him off the piano when we are ready to relax. In fairness to him, I know he plays the piano TO relax so I had a crazy idea...buy him a keyboard to have upstairs in his room.

It took some trial and error, but we found one he likes at an affordable price.

Happy Birthday and Merry Christmas to him!

He is thrilled.

We are thrilled.

Everyone is thrilled. :-)

Last, but certainly not least.

Here's where you can follow along with me and my writing (hoping there will be more than one book someday):

Website/blog (not active yet, but getting there)

I attempted to use WordPress instead of Blogger based on several recommendations for authors. It has been a learning process! I think I'm almost there, but still a few tweaks to make.

Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and are enjoying the extended break!

Five for Friday -- Classroom Setup!

Happy Friday!

And it is happy! I spent the week working in my classroom. My goal was to have it completely set up (insert picture of clean, pretty classroom all set up--can you believe I forgot to take one as I left??? I promise I'll do a reveal when I go back.). Now I can relax next week--my last week before reporting on August 17th! Yikes!

I'm linking up with Doodle Bugs for Five Four for Friday again.
I'm a bad blogger and didn't take very many pictures today!

1

I got a new phone, and I am loving the quality of the pictures I'm getting!

Just look at those pencil sharpeners! My kiddos use these on their colored pencils ONLY because my sharpener doesn't like colored pencils.
I took this picture only because I needed to show our school secretary what to order--somehow got missed on my supply list.

2

My "Be" board is complete.

I bought these wooden letters at Wal-Mart. My daughter painted them orange, hot glued thumb tacks on the back, and here you have it.

I'm going to add words to the board after we talk about them.
First up:

I purchased the words from Tonya's Treats for Teachers--reasonable price made them a HUGE time saver!
I took the "Be" board pictures this morning when I was still energetic and thinking about my blog post. Ha!

3

My new student packs--also something I did early in the day so I remembered the picture!

I used this for my G is for Genius Instagram post because, well, it is genius! Not sure where I first saw the idea, but after my first year of teaching and rushing around to gather items for my new students, I knew this was the answer! Inside these bags is everything I need to quickly get prepared for a new little person to join my classroom. ;-)

In case you're wondering, the flip book is an editable FREEBIE from Pride and Primary.

This picture...I actually took, added the writing, and sent to my principal with the message: Not happy! :(

Don't be worried for me.
My principal is a friend, so I can do this sort of thing and not get in trouble. Ha!

The technology people installed WiFi routers in our rooms, and apparently my principal forgot to let me know this messy installation was only temporary.

Huge sigh of relief!

A few minutes after reassuring me this was not the finished install, he sent me a text wanting to know how to write on pictures. LOL!

And that's all I've got...

Have a great weekend!

Small Victories

First, I have to apologize for no pictures...again. I'm telling you, the schedule I have this year leaves me with little time to snap pictures.

I even had a great photo op planned last Friday. We have been working on fractions and reading a recipe in math, so I decided the kids and I should bake cookies. I got permission to use the kitchen (small school, remember?) and Friday afternoon for our "fun thing" we made chocolate chip cookies. I planned to take pictures ALL day and then...well...as you can see it didn't happen. I made a joke later that I was finally a nice teacher and didn't even have any proof. Ha! Kristi even teased me...didn't believe I was capable of having so much "fun!" Hee hee...we both love our routine, but every once in awhile I do get a crazy idea or two.

This week I lost a student (moved away) and gained a student so I'm holding steady at 23. I'm happy to report that my newbie did a wonderful job today during Daily 5. I gave her a trusted mentor and went on with my groups as normal. The only problem I have...and it is a good problem...is that I now have 8 kids in my highest reading group and we can't fit very well around my back table! We will manage, I guess.

Hmmm...small victories...sorry I almost forgot where I was headed with this post. LOL! I'm celebrating the small victories this year. Here's a few:

Victory #1 - All of my struggling readers are showing progress...some small, others HUGE!
Victory #2 - Speaking of that, I moved one of my kiddos to a higher reading group today. I was hoping it would encourage, not frustrate. She did awesome and read so well! It really boosted her confidence.
Victory #3 - One of my kiddos who I have struggled to connect with gave me a very big hug today. :-)
Victory #4 - Math rotations are getting better. Some of my kiddos are starting to do Mountain Math and Mountain Language w/o help.
Victory #5 - All of the Kindergartners sang the first (of five - at least it was one, right?) songs we are practicing for the program. I usually have 4-5 who do not consistently participate. :-(

Here's a little freebie for you if you have stuck with me. This is a Connect Four game I'm using this week to work on the long e sound. Students play in pairs, take turns rolling the dice. They then attempt a word with that number in the corner. If correct, they can put a marker on their square. I even let my kiddos knock each other off...they love it!

Grab it here quick. It will go back to regular price of $1.00 (still a good price) soon!

Have a great week!

New Student = I’m exhausted!!!

Okay, so I am still fairly new at teaching (2nd year) and I have never had a new student before, so forgive me if all you veteran teachers are saying, “Well, duh!” I mean, don’t get me wrong, I knew getting a new student would be a challenge – especially this time of year – but WOW! I am so tired! My class right now is was like a well-oiled machine in regards to routines and procedures. I was planning to happily coast through the next 22 days. But (big BUT) remembering how to explain all the little things about procedure, routine, schedule, etc. is just exhausting. I guess I feel much like I did at the beginning of the year! Whew!!!

My new student came on Tuesday which was a busy day for me anyway. My own children are in 4-H and sold Blue and Gold Sausage (very good, BTW, if you ever have a chance to get some of their products). The meat came in Tuesday so I had to “fly” to the town where I live on my plan time (25 miles away) and “fly” back to deliver meat to my coworkers because I do not have room to store it at my house. Fortunately, I can take a toll road to my town which allows me to drive 80 75 so I made it back just in time to dismiss my kids for the day so I could explain to my new student where she needed to go! Then I had to run around like a crazy person walk around and calmly deliver the meat before leaving quickly to go to my son’s track meet an hour away. I made it just in time to see him run his mile – his favorite race – and I’m glad I did! He ran it in 5 min. 57 sec., his fastest time ever, and he got first place!

My son is in 6th grade this year and because my kids go to a small school, 6th graders are allowed to do middle school sports so they have enough participants (even though they are not technically in middle school). This has made me feel really old, by the way…having a child in “middle school” sports. The sad part is next year when he is “officially” in “middle school” it will be my daughter (my youngest) in 6th grade. My years of being an elementary school mom are over I’m afraid…

Anyway, things went a little smoother with my new one today. She remembered our morning procedure without me saying a word! Yeah!!! Maybe that well-oiled machine is not far away…I HOPE!
Oh, and here is a funny video I thought I'd share about the 6 Phases of Teaching. Warning! My husband just informed me that one of these songs have a cuss word - I did not even notice! Too busy reading the funny sayings and watching the cats!

Have a great evening! This is my one free one for the week! Woohoo!

P.S. Our main story this week was Olivia so we are doing a cute and simple “extra fun thing” tomorrow. We’ll post pictures when it is all finished. J
