Place Value Grab and Salute!! Fun Math Games!!

We have been playing a couple of games that the kids have really loved in math.  The first one, I call place value grab.  The students get with a partner and put flats, longs and cubes in the middle.  One of them closes his/her eyes and has 3 seconds to grab from the pile.  When the time is up, they have to count how much they have.  If they are right, they get to keep them, if they are incorrect, they have to put the pieces back in the pile.  Whoever has the most at the end wins the game.
(Sorry, I didn't get a picture of this one)

The other game is called Salute and it comes from the Everyday Math Program.  This game helps students practice adding and finding missing addends.  Students get into groups of 3.  One person begins as the Dealer.  The Dealer gives one card to each of the other 2 players.  Without looking at their cards, the Players hold them on their foreheads with the number facing out.  The Dealer looks at both cards and says the sum of the 2 numbers.  Each player looks at the other Player's card.  They use the number they see and the sum said by the Dealer to figure out what the number on their card must be.  They say that number out loud.

The kids have been begging me to play these games every day!

Have a great day!

Happy Friday! Freebie Alert--Today Only!

Good morning!

My first full week off has been crazy! Although Wednesday was a chilly day and perfect for a little curled up on the couch, movie watching with my kids. ;-)

My son is finishing up driver's education this morning which means we are on our way to getting his restricted license. Yikes! Each morning while he was in class, my daughter and I have been working out and shooting hoops.

Yesterday I was sent to Wichita to get the things we need to tile my new bathroom and laundry room floors. Yippee! I should have a functioning second bathroom on Monday. I have waited FOREVER for this so I am super excited. I'll post pictures soon. :-)

Okay, now for the real purpose of this post. I wanted to let you in on a great new product I posted on TPT: Math Helper (with workmats)! These are going to be AMAZING for my kiddos next year. Our math series had a math folder with some of the information, but I'm abandoning the series for next year AND I wanted the open number line, 20 frame, and most of all a place value mat!

I listed it as a freebie because I wanted to thank all of our followers--TPT, blog, and Instagram. The price will change to $2 (still a great deal if you ask me) after today, so go grab it for free while you can.

Place Value Penguin Fun!

I just had to share this little note...

I feel pretty inadequate as the K-2 music teacher so this did my heart good. This is from one of my 1st grade sweeties. It is kind of fun to get to know the kids I will be getting next year for 2nd grade. :-)

*****

As promised...pictures of a great little place value activity. I was actually able to snag this during our last blog hop, but when I went searching for it to give credit it is still listed as free. So lucky YOU! This place value penguin pack came from Stephanie at Falling into First. I used the penguin cards (both sets - it comes with tens and ones and hundreds, tens and ones) for a little game of "Scoot."

Before "scooting," I called on someone to come up and write their numbers in expanded notation. This is also something we've been working on. It was great! The kids loved it and they were learning. So win-win!

Also included in the pack was a simple dice game. Roll the dice to make a two (or three) digit number. Then write it in expanded form. More fun practice - PERFECT!

Finally, the kids loved it so much that I even let them do some more expanded notation on white boards with partners later that day.

This was one of my favorite types of activities. Little prep work for me, lots of practice for the kids, and FUN! Best of all, I tucked the cards and master copies away for next year.

Thanks Stephanie!

Returning From Spring Break

We are on the last days of our spring break....we start back again on Monday.  Sounds like a lot of you are getting ready to go on spring break.  I was able to see my mom and spend some mother-daughter time with her.  We had a great time (eating, shopping, going to the movies, laughing)!  It's nice to take the time off and spend it with family.

When we return from spring break, Crystal and I are hoping that our boot camps that we did will still be fresh in their little minds.
:-)  Our hopes are that they remember all about the place value and counting money.  As a quick review, I plan on having the kiddos play the game that Crystal made on money (I Have Who Has).

Come grab your free version of it:

If you are getting ready for spring break, I hope you have a great one and have some nice weather for it.  We had some nice days during spring break and then it got cold.  Now we have another winter storm heading our way.  :-(  I'm so ready for that spring weather.

Have a great week and don't forget to check out our sale on TPT (it ends on March 23):

Preparing for Place Value Boot Camp

We have worked on place value with our kiddos and it always seems like it is a difficult concept to grasp. So, we found this cute video from teachertipster.com

If you have never seen this guy, you really need to watch him.  He is so good and has some really great ideas!  After seeing this, we found that Missy Johnson from T.G.I.F had seen this video and had the great idea to do a place value boot camp with her students.  (Thanks Missy for sharing this awesome idea!)

After seeing these two great ideas, we thought that we would do something similar next week during our math time.  We have had several teachers bringing us props to help us play the roll as a drill sergeant and Crystal has been practicing using her drill sergeant voice and singing the chant LOL!  I told her that I would be the one to stand back and take pictures :-).

So, we told our kiddos what we would be doing next week and they are so excited about it.  In fact, by the end of the day last week, my students were practicing saying yes ma'am to me after every direction that I gave them.  :-)

Come back later next week to check out our pictures of place value boot camp!  Kristi
