I have tried to get 20 minutes in, but felt rushed. Thanks! Does everyone take the comprehension test individually on Friday, or do they work on it in a small group with you? What do your mini lessons look like Tuesday-Friday? I was thinking something like this...
Lesson 1-Comprehension strategy
Lesson 2-Grammar Skill
Lesson 3- Spelling
I am not crazy about doing a spelling mini-lesson here, but I have to make sure I teach all three daily since I have to give a weekly test on reading, spelling, and grammar. Also, I am working with a 90 minute literacy block.
Do you use book boxes for Read to Self? I do not have an extensive book collection like the Daily 5 book recommends since we primarily use our basal. I am trying to figure out a way to make that work with limited books.
AllisonAllisonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08227233281691597475noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4873401656090798277.post-42763963582749117622014-07-09T12:30:56.433-07:002014-07-09T12:30:56.433-07:00I do a modified version of Daily 5 for an hour. Otherwise, they choose where they go and the order they go in.
❀ Tammy
Forever in FirstTammyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18053983168084838303noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4873401656090798277.post-26022890738476744972014-07-09T09:48:01.261-07:002014-07-09T09:48:01.261-07:00Thank you so much for this information-it is very ...Thank you so much for this information-it is very helpful. I feel relieved that I can do 3 rounds instead of 5. I was sort of doing that last year, but wasn't feeling good about it because I thought I needed to be doing 5 rounds. So glad to know this-Thanks for sharing! I switched mine around a little bit due to timing last year. I would not do Daily 5 on Monday and would do whole class introduction to our comprehension skills/vocab. for the week (this came from the basal). I would do Daily 5 the rest of the week. I would meet with each group for about 20 min. and we would do our basal stuff in the groups like read the story and work on comprehension of it. We would work on the comprehension selection tests over the story (came from the basal) after reading the story in small group. Basically, I just incorporated our reading basal program into my small reading groups except on Monday when I would introduce everything for the week on that day. Hope this helps. Good luck implementing it, you will fall in love with it. Like you mentioned, I am also skeptical about how this program will work for me. My school uses a basal reading program. I am required to teach a weekly story and administer a weekly comprehension test. I just finished the Daily 5 book, but I am still concerned how to mesh Daily 5 and a basal reading program. I have a 90 minute literacy block. I would appreciate any advice you have about how to use both.
AllisonAllisonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08227233281691597475noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4873401656090798277.post-57760196301090725382014-07-06T08:48:49.165-07:002014-07-06T08:48:49.165-07:00the newest editon of the daily 5 book suggests doi...the newest editon of the daily 5 book suggests doing only three rounds after you have to taught all five choices that way the kids have more choice and you can do it in less timeAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09857006427652739713noreply@blogger.com
